Royal Inauguration of the Rabat-Salé tramway and the Hassan II Bridge

His Majesty King Mohammed VI, May God Preserve him, inaugurated Wednesday, May 18th Hassan II Bridge and the two tramway lines in Rabat-Sale, two outstanding achievements that are a source of pride for all Moroccans. Both buildingsare considered, as priority projects, which concerns the facilities of general interest as part of the development of the Bouregreg Valley.

The Hassan II Bridge and the Rabat-Sale tramway are two leading mobility infrastructure that help the crossing over of Bouregregriver and eliminate distance between the twin cities.

In addition, the new bridge Hassan II will restore the navigability of the river with its air draft of 10 m and a height of 12.8 m. The bridge was designed by the renowned firm Marc Mimram. The entirety of components and structures were built on site, and it was carried out mainly by Moroccan companies, with the help of offices and control laboratories on site.

This is a structure with a length of 1215 m and a width of 46 m. The latter is composed of three buildings including two pedestrian lanes, the tramway platform lanes for motorcycles and 3 lanes for traffic in each direction. The overall cost of the bridge and its access roads, amounted to 1 billion 200 million DH.

The Rabat-Salé tramway is a historic achievement that operates a qualitative leap in the field of urban public transport. The network consists of two lines totaling 19.5 km and 31 stations. The rolling stock of the tram, which is to international standards, is composed of 44 trains of 32 meters, the type Citadis, Alstom last product supplier. The air-conditioned low-floor for easy access for people with reduced mobility. Note that the design of the trains was madespecifically for the Rabat-Sale tramway with a Moroccan touch inspired zellige.

The commercial operation of the tramway network of Rabat-Salé, called “TRAM” will be gradual and will start on Monday May 23, 2011. Three open days are organized for citizens from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 May 2011.

Note that the operation of the Rabat-Salé tramway is provided by the company Transdev, 5th international operator of public transport network. A local organization dedicated was installed at the Maintenance Center in Hay Karima in Sale.

The Tramway Society Rabat-Salé (STRS), a subsidiary of the Agency for the Development of the Bouregreg Valley, provides the project management of the operation and its operations directly or indirectly. The investment budget of the first Rabat-Salé Tramway network is 3.5 billion dirhams TTC.
